Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island, which is located in southwest of the coastal terrority of Florida is a picturesque high ground offshore island famous for it’s environmental aspects, serene shoreline and numerous sea shells. Its history dates back more than six thousand years, due to the formation of sand and shell material aong the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, which later resulted in the creation of a distinct crescent island.

The first inhabitants of the island were the Calusa Indians who lived off the island’s resources. The Calusa were expert fisherman and shell workers who constructed impressive edifices such as shell structures some of which can be still seen today.

In the later parts of the 19th century, many people stepping foot on the island for the first time was primarily due to the opening up of virgin lands for agricultural settlement and the burgeoning of the fishing business. The year 1884 bore great significance in Sanibel’s history as it saw the establishment of the Sanibel Lighthouse, which showcased the homesteading activities of the inhabitants of Sanibel as a settlement on the Gulf Coast. Tourists started to pour into Sanibel after the year 1963 when the causeway connecting the island to the mainland was finished.

Currently, attending Sanibel Island is in itself a consolation with fifty percent of the area’s land set aside for conservation purposes mainly in the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Forever, the island of Sanibel will remain a beautiful paradise for the nature lovers and especially the collectors of shells from al the corners of the globe.

Anna Maria Island Beach

Nestled in the Gulf Of Mexico, Anna Maria Island attracts tourists from different parts of the world mainly due to its sugar white sandy beaches, undulating emerald waters, and its pleasing beauty. It is located approximately seven miles between the Gulf Of Mexico and Sarasota bay, and covers three main areas which include, the city of Anna Maria located at the north, central Holmes beach and southern Bradenton Beach.

For centuries, this island has existed, inhabited by the native munk’s known as the calusa people until the Spanish conquisadors set foot in the America’s during the middle of sixteen hundreds. By the 1800s, growth had been limited to mainly seasonal settlers and it was almost impossible to get to the island except by boat. This situation was altered when in the year nineteen twenty, the first bridge linking Anna Maria Island to the main land was erected. It was a wonderful time for the Inn people as with increased tendency to travel, people started looking for ways to make profits. It is clear then that the island started developing for tourism unlike before when it was simply a coastal fishing town.

As for Anna Maria Island today, tourists can still remember the ambiance with its relaxed atmosphere without high rise buildings and fast food chains, true to the ‘old Florida’ image. Tourists appreciate spending time on the beautiful beaches and fishing piers and enjoying the local cuisine, as well as visiting natural places, such as parks filled with mangrove swamps and animals. The destination achieves a perfect mix for most tourists by relaxing them at the same time allowing them to fully engage into the active local market scenes and seasonal festivities within Sightseeing History and Nature Georgetown.
